However, historically most Ellicott City floods have been caused by surges from the Patapsco River, not by overflows and backups from the Tiber Branch uphill. It is a historic mill town that was built to take advantage of the high-volume, fast-moving water. Avoid wading in floodwater, which can be contaminated and contain dangerous debris. Ellicott City has a long history of flooding, which makes sense given its topography.Turn off the electricity to prevent electric shock if it is safe to do so. Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. Be aware of the risk of electrocution.Be aware that snakes and other animals may be in your house.Children should not take part in disaster cleanup work. ELLICOTT CITY, MD Howard County’s Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, July 20th to present plans for the construction of a flood mitigation facility (Pond H-4), that is part of the County’s Ellicott City Safe and Sound plan. People with asthma and other lung conditions and/or immune suppression should not enter buildings with indoor water leaks or mold growth that can be seen or smelled.Wear heavy work gloves, protective clothing and boots during clean up and use appropriate face coverings or masks if cleaning mold or other debris.Return home only when authorities say it is safe. Pay attention to authorities for information and instructions.Do not climb into a closed attic to avoid getting trapped by rising floodwater. Only get on the roof if necessary and once there signal for help. ![]() Get to the highest level if trapped in a building.Get on the roof if water is rising inside the car. Stay inside your car if it is trapped in rapidly moving water.Fast-moving water can wash bridges away without warning. Stay off bridges over fast-moving water. To support this assumption, the flood maps are compared to 12 street cameras that were placed in historical downtown Ellicott City by an association of citizens after the 2016 flood (Ellicott City Unilux Camera Network Peters 2019).Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters.Listen to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions regarding flooding.If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1. ![]() Wait for further care instructions and shelter in place, if possible.
